Code 61 - Disconnects, Stuck notes

Hello, my Code 61 stops working randomly. It stops sending midi messages keeping sustaining note/notes played, 2-10 times/hour. I need to shut off power supply to reset it. I have tried with USB only (MainStage, Mach5, SampleTank) and MIDI only (FantomXR) both, with no difference. Firmware 1.2.0. I'd hate to replace it because of the good feel of the keybed!

  • I have had the same problem and done a lot of experiments to find out why. It seems like the midi port is suddenly turned off. I have spent very much time trying to resolve it, and have another thread on this forum. I am so close to returnering my Code61. Probably I will return it this Saturday unless m-audio technicians provide a solution here by then.

  • Yes I've tried on USB with and without power supply, and on MIDI only with a rack module: there wasn't any difference. I've monitored midi output with Digital Performer and, oddly, when Code61 suddenly stops sending midi data, CoreMIDI doesn't detect any disconnection. MacOSX hardware diagnostic shows the keyboard connected. So USB always connected but MIDI stopped! Really strange.

  • Is it happening really randomly or after some intensive playing? I have the same thing happening during some tricky performances with a lot of aftertouch usage or something like that. The only way to prevent this is being more gentle with the keyboard.

  • Hi Marioluca,

    Thanks for posting.

This sounds like a bad USB cable or a bad MIDI cable. Please make sure to try different USB cables, even if you are only using it for power. This sounds like a similar problem we faced months ago with the Code keyboards being shipped with bad cables. Customers just replaced the cable and everything was fixed.

As always, make sure to run a test with a MIDI monitor. I recommend to use your software until it stops and then without disconnecting the Code, pull up a MIDI Monitor and test it out:

    MIDI Monitor

Open MIDI Monitor with all other programs closed. In the "Sources" section, check the boxes for your controller's ports.
Now MIDI Monitor will list all incoming MIDI Messages. This will help confirm if the controller itself is responding properly.

Does the Code respond in the MIDI Monitor?

If you are still having trouble, please reach out to our Tech Support team directly and they will be able to take a closer look at this with you. Here are a couple of options that you could choose from:

    • Submit Warranty or Service inquiry with our Technical Support team by logging onto the M-Audio Support Page. Select Warranty or Service Inquiry from the drop down menu. This will not require a support code

    or

    • For quicker support, call your nearest Support Office or International Distributor.

Let me know if you have any additional questions!

  • I have tried at least 6 different, new USB cables. I have connected my Code 61 directly to all USB ports on my PC. I also had your tech support verify my Cubase setup via Teamviewer. It is really random. Sometimes the midi signals stop after a few seconds of playing, directly after I powered up my gear. Other times it happened while I had a 20 minuttes break. When I came back, no midi signals were received by my computer. By at least 10 occasions I spent hours reviewing all of the eventlogs on my computer to see if there was a background task engaged while the midiport stopped, but I saw nothing suspicious. So, unfortunately, my conclusion is that the Code 61 stops sending midi signals because of a software error in Code 61.

  • Hi all!
I am having exactly the same issue as Marioluca; meanwhile my thread has been closed.

I used my Code 61 as a secondary midi keyboard for my Kurzweil PC3LE6, and I totally agree with Marioluca that the keys feel really lovely to play on.
Besides, I love the faders to use them as hammond drawbars.

Unfortunately, I can not afford to use the Code 61 for gigs anymore.
I never can tell if it would get stuck in the middle of my best solo.
Also, I can confirm that the midi signal freezes no matter how "hard" you play.
It hangs up as well, even if I play very gently.
It's not the midi cable, nor is it the power supply.

This February, I had returned the Code 61 to my distributor for warranty (Thomann Germany), but I got it back with the message that they could not find an error.
In the meantime, I got a cheap used Axiom for my gigs, so the Code61 is standing around in a corner.
So I will anxiously follow this thread to see if this problem could find a solution.

I ask because I went almost 6 months without any freeze-ups but have had 3 since I updated to 1.2. Same cables. Same everything.

  • Now I use it connected directly to my Macbook Pro on batteries with a good 3m USB cable from MOTU and it seems ok. I guess the issue is due to a poor keyboard's power stabilization. The problem is that my Macbook can power the Code and the Focusrite interface (without power supply) for 3-3,5 hours only on batteries with MainStage running!!!

  • Unfortunately, I cannot confirm.
Provided that it does not matter if you use a USB or a MIDI connection,
I powered my Code61 in three different ways:
    - via USB from my main keyboard
    - via USB from power socket
    - via corresponding power adapter from the "store of my trust"

It does not make a difference.

I would rather tend to check my current firmware, like "STF" suggested.
But I have to admit I haven't taken my Code61 out of the case during the last month.

I am really hoping for a fix and hopefully M-Audio figures this one out so I can go back to trusting my keyboard to get me through an entire set. I guess it is time to start looking for a replacement. :(

    Guys,

I had this problem with Novation Launchkey 61... while i had the Novation i changed my Macbook Pro 15 " twice and had the same problem. After some disconnection while i was playing in concerts i said that i have to change the keyboard...

P.S I talked with their staff for about one month and they didn't found any issue...

After a while i bought the M Audio Code 61 and had the same problems... It's so frustrating...

  • My Code61 is doing the same thing because it never happened before. I believe it is a firmware issue as someone mentioned...I'll be in the middle of a gig and unexpected MainStage will stop responding. I would need to power off the controller then power back on.
    It is really terrible.
I don't have any keyboards or other controllers so I really hope this is fix.

@Kevin I have firmware 1.2 but I experienced the problem with the previous firmware also.

    Dear all,
could we do a test all together? Try shutting off all the beautiful and colorful led buttons and pads light!
I say this because I noted some difference on the power supply. Powerbook battery ONLY -> less stuck notes. Powerbook powered OR USB power through a hub OR external power supply -> more errors. I think it's just a weak internal power engineering!
Moreover, I have doubt that M-Audio is listening us OR that they are so engaged to solve this problem!!! Please click on my first post that you too have this problem!

  • Hey Marioluca, I currently have all of my pad lights off. I'll try taking off the button lights too and update you. I play it at church so got to wait till tomorrow to do this test.

BTW, is there a way to stop seeing messages on the controller display like, sustain everytime I press the pedal or aftertouch, pitch bend, modulation? Too me it is kind of annoying. Don't need to see it.

@norbert. You used a midi cable as well? Midi to USB cable and you encountered problems as well?

It seems the stuck notes problem is pretty serious.

I have tried every USB cable I have in the house, including the one that came with my Code61, and am still getting stuck notes.

    Any other thoughts on this?

Considering the (null) support provided from M-audio in 8 months to solve the problem, and the fact that I wasn't the only one facing the issue (and the lacking of the company support) I was forced to give my Code 61 in warranty back to the seller and I got an Italian Fatar's keyboard. I'm sorry, I tried and tried but I couldn't help anyone. Thank you all.

It's sad because this is my first Maudio product. I wouldn't be buying anymore Maudio products.

Marioluca, what is the name of the Italian fatar keyboard? Is it a controller?

  • Hi, the same problem here. Suddenly sooner or later the Midi-Connection is disabled automatically. Restart the Keyboard is the only solution.

I'll return it!! Unusable for live performances etc...

I've tried it with different Midi-Interfaces connected to iPad or Mac.

  • I have the same problem Every month I do a 4-hour gig with the code-61 connected to a midi organ module. Sometime in the 3d or 4th set the unit stops sending the note-off commands. I press shift-transpose to do a midi panic, but then the display keeps displaying "PANIC" and no keys work anymore, so I need to power it off and then on. It happens once every gig.

  • Same problem here (OSX - 5k screen recent iMac - either logic or cubase) since I bought my code61 (1year ago) I tried everything (firmware updates.. reinstalling my system...) then I got back to my old controller keyboard that works no problem. Code61on my system is totally unusable: it freezes after a few minutes. It is quite obvious it is a problem with drivers. I am waiting for m-audio to address this.. they must have received tons of complaints and it is incredible how long they have us waiting on this! Come on guys, release new drivers as a xmas present for who spent quite a few bucks on this beautiful keyboard that looks great but just doesn't work!!

  • Hi everyone,

If you are experiencing this problem, please contact your local support team as per my instructions above. This is by no means a common problem for Code series owners, myself included.

Please understand, that besides a possible hardware problem, and more commonly issues with USB cables, there are tons of reasons for stuck notes to occur for any keyboard. It would be impossible to provide a one-stop solution for all of you here on the forums.

For that reason, please contact your local support team to discuss this one on one. Selecting "Warranty or Service Inquiry" will allow you to contact support without the need for a support code.

Corey S: I was really tired. I changed three high quality USB cables and I used MIDI cables too, without any improvement.

All the three USB cables were perfect with my cheap UKEY49 and with Keystation88 though they didn't work with my CODE61! The cables work perfectly with a MOTU828 audio interface! So it would be better for you not to make excuses like cables quality.

I used Midi monitor as asked and the response was simple: the keyboard locks and stops to send every midi data, midi note-off too!

The distributor, Soundwave didn't helped me: I had to give back my CODE61 to my seller in warranty. He didn't have to take it back but fortunately he is a trustworthy person. My new keyboard WORKS!

Please treat your customers with respect.

    • Resetted Mainstage. Mainstage's preferences trashed. Talked with Soundwave they told me to take it to the seller. I went to the seller, it looked the keyboard and took it back. A bought another keyboard: any problem! Now I'm happy, but I waisted 8 month!!! Please note that I have a Keystation88 too and it's ok.
    • Again, my first and last posts both cited a potential hardware problem in your case and i referred you to contact your distributor for service. I even cited in my last post that the reference to mainstage preferences was likely unrelated to your issue.

Please understand that I am here to assist all users of the thread and it's important that I provide information that may help each and every one.

Hi, when I saw Corey's response "tons of reasons for stuck notes" it suggested to me that M-Audio hasn't got this problem figured out. If they had, we would have seen the answer (or answers if there is more than one cause as Corey suggests) in this forum.

Fortunately, I purchased the Code61 from Musicians Friend, and their return policy is reasonable. I sent it back to them today.

    • Corey-
I wish I was able to return my keyboard to sweetwater after so much time has passed but I am unable to. I think a lot of us are frustrated that we as early adopters of the product have been let down by this issue. Nothing worse then being responsible to play something in a performance and have the keyboard unresponsive.

It's also a shame that the include hardware - the USB cord - is considered at fault in some instances. So now the consumer has to go spend additional money to attempt to figure out the problem.

When that doesn't work and you are left with spending much time, or in my case, hours updating firmware, updating or restoring software, sometimes even an entire OS in case it was somehow the underlying problem.

In the end, you have invested time and money on a product you cannot trust to get you through a performance and thus don't want to use or even practice with. This results in wasted money. If you have a strong conscience then you don't dare sell it to anyone either.

I had my keyboard sent for repair and am not entirely sure that it works like it should because I haven't had another gig that had the same amount of demand. I can tell you that your repair center managed to mess up my mod wheels (rubs against the cutout) and my 5 pin MIDI in and out.

These are the things that concern us consumers and MAUDIOs silence on the issue doesn't exactly instill much confidence in purchasing future products. I appreciate that you have started to communicate, but your solutions are not any solution we haven't already heard or most likely already tried.

I think the un-realistic solution would be for MAUDIO to offer an exchange program or refund as part of a voluntary recall. Like I said, unrealistic.
    • Absolutely same problem here and again I cannot sell it on eBay I would feel dishonest. This was my first M-audio product and I have to say I am definitely not a satisfied costumer. An exchange program would be the least M-audio could do.

I'm so confused Cory S. It's way too many complaints to say this isn't a common problem. I too am experiencing the same issues. I just purchased the Code25 today. However, due to these cloud of witnesses who have purchased their items from various distributors I am convinced that it "is" common and I will be returning mine before I am left with no help from technical support
