Profire Lightbridge Yosemite Driver

http://community.m-audio.com/m-audio/...

In specific reference to the above driver, or other possible solutions, will this work with a Profire Lightbridge under Yosemite? Or will the 10.7.4 driver for the Lightbridge work under 10.10?

I am currently using the Lightbridge under Mountain Lion...and while I know it is a certified ancient device, I have read about one user finding a driver to make it work under Yosemite...tried contacting them to figure out which driver that was... but haven't heard back yet.

I have not yet updated to Yosemite, and I won't until I know for sure I can make it work...but would like to do it if I can make it work.

Please I don't need anyone saying I should just throw the sound card away...because I specifically need all the lightpipe I/O under Firewire otherwise I would!

Thanks!

  • Hello,

    Thanks for posting.

The Lightbridge is actually a different driver than the Profire 610/2626, shared with the other legacy FireWire products (Project Mix I/O, FireWire Solo, etc...). Here's that driver, which is likely the one you're referring to in your post:

    http://m-audio.com/support/download/d...

There will not be any future updates for the legacy FireWire products. I think some are able to get this driver running on OS X Yosemite, but the feedback here is not consistent enough where I would recommend updating to Yosemite if you depend on your Lightbridge working.

  • Thanks.

Would you consider selling an extended support plan, considering it seems like there are a significant amount of people still using this (with no obvious replacement in site)? I'm guessing you have most of the owners' emails and could send out a survey to gauge interest. I personally would throw $50 at having a supported driver for another few years.

  • Happy to help!

I don't speak for any development plans here on the forums.

What I can do is submit a feature request for you - for Profire Lightbridge future OS X updates/support. Consider it done!

  • Im going to second this...

My wonder is why is no one making a current interface like the lightbridge? It seems like that would be a easy part of the market to grab since so many people want it.

  • It seems my lightbridge is not working under Yosemite.
Please add me to the feature request. My other soundcard has been updating drivers and works just fine. It will surely influence my buying decisions in the near future.

  • Can I add to the list of requests for an updated OSX driver, at least 10.9 as that was the best OS from Apple after 10.6.8. 10.10 is pretty good, so if that was also supported, it would be excellent. Of course if it works on 10.9 it may "just work" on 10.10.

I think at this stage even partial functionality would be fine, ie the ability to address all ADAT in/out ports, as this feature is where the Lightbridge stands apart.

Otherwise could you consider open sourcing the drivers so that the community can take this on?

    Thanks, Ric.

  • Hi Dan R, could you please you send me a link to the reports of people getting the lightbridge working under Yosemite - might give us some clues, thanks!

For me, the driver loads in Yosemite 10.10.4 just fine. Like others, the control panel does not work. However, using an old non-updated macbook (10.6.8), I was able to create some commonly used plist files and if I copy the plist file with the settings I want to use and reboot, it comes up and works just fine. The name of the plist file is com.m-audio.device-settings.firewire.plist and it's located in hd/Users//Library/Preferences. If anyone is interested, I'll gladly make the plist files available.

  • I'm still on my old version of Mac OS, but since of course cannot download Yosemite since Apple has pulled it...any ideas if this fix works under El Capitan? I'm not ready to upgrade to that either, until the programs I use are all supported...was just curious if anyone has tried.

    Thanks

  • I was able to get my ProFire Lightbridge to work on Mavericks and the GUI preference pane.

I followed the directory path hd/Users//Library/Preferences and then opened the com.m-audio preferences plist. I copied the info from my existing Lion OS plist into the plist for Mavericks. Then I the GUI opened up and I was able to input my settings.

    Here are my current settings:

  • What is a good replacement for the profire lightbridge? Any recommendations? Seems like m-audio is done supporting us so maybe a hardware that has a longer shelf life. It wasn't broke. No need to fix.

  • PROFIRE LIGHTBRIDGE USERS, A SOLUTION: Since this has been highly discussed on several forums, I'm leaving my solution to help others, so they don't have to google for hours and hours in a quest for a solution. A while back I bought an Alesis XT ADAT and a Profire Lightbridge. M-Audio stopped supporting the Profire Lightbridge after the release of Mountain Lion (although the driver still worked under Mountain Lion and Mavericks). After updating to Yosemite, the driver stopped working. I searched for a solution for a long time to get the equipment working again. A few days ago, while replacing my hard drive to an SSD, it hit me. So, I created two partitions, one for El Capitan and another one for Mountain Lion (you can install a previous OSX if you want to). So I'm now on a MacBook Pro with Dual Boot, and the Profire Lightbridge is working again under Mountain Lion :-D Hope this help you guys. All the best!

M-Audio, please, consider the possibility of updating the Lightbridge driver. I think there are many people here that would pay a little bit for it, take into account that the unit is a hub for many people ADAT's lines in pro or semi pro settings.

Hello again - I managed to get my Lightbridge working well under OSX El Capitan, with all ADAT active (recording 96khz, 16 ADAT channels from my Apogee converters, and clocked from a external source).

Here is exactly what i have done:

    1. Do the installation of the driver, using the package and instructions provided by Olav in this post: http://maudio.boards.net/thread/4/fir.... After following the installation procedure, the Lightbridge will be visible under OSX El Capitan (showing up in midi/audio configuration), but only with 10 channels, as only one ADAT input is activated by default. Sadly it is not possible to open the M-Audio control panel at the system preferences to activate them, so I had to do this next:

    2. I installed the M-Audio original driver from M-Audio in a laptop i have with Snow Leopard, and used the Lightbridge control panel to activate the ADAT and select other configuration options.

    3. In that same computer, went to User > Library > Preferences to locate the preference list files created by m-audio, which are "com.m-audio.device-settings.firewire.plist" (this is the important one that stores the input / output configuration, clock source, etc.), and "com.m-audio.appc.MAfw.plist" (this one i think only stores the configuration panel status). I took both files and took them to my main computer.

    4. I downloaded from the App Store and installed in my main computer the Apple's application "XCode", which - amongst other things - allows you to open, edit and save preference list (.plist) files.

    5. I went to User > Library > Preferences > and opened the file "com.m-audio.device-settings.firewire.plist" in XCode.

    6. I also opened in another window the file i had imported from my laptop with the right settings (ADAT activated, clock source, 96khz, etc)... and copied the Lightbridge settings from the laptop, to the main computer plist file.

    7. Saved the file with the updated settings, and exit XCode.

    8. This is likely not relevant, but i did it anyway: the file "com.m-audio.appc.MAfw.plist" was not present in my main computer's, so I copied the one from my laptop into my User > Library > Preferences folder.

    9. I shut down the computer, connect again the M-Audio Profire Lightbridge, and reboot.

    10. I went to Midi / Audio configuration, and the Lightbridge was there working at 96 khz, with all ADAT channels activated (18 ins including the SPDIF, etc.) and clocked from a external source :)

I have been doing some tests and so far it has been totally reliable, no cracks/pops whatsoever. I hope this helps somebody to get their Lightbridge working under El Capitan.

To reach this point has taken one day and a half of my time. And it really calls my attention that the driver seems indeed to work fine, so without a technical reason behind, why M-Audio does not support it any more?

With all due respect, this is not responsible and i hope this changes in the future on a global level. Programmed obsolescence is a crime against human kind and the world, and making all us users lose our time and money in this, it is a VERY bad image policy. If i had to buy or recommend another M-Audio product tomorrow, i would think more than twice about it because of this.
    • Great David! This saved my day. I followed "not" exactly your instructions, instead of using x-code to edit the .plist, i copied the files from an existing Snow Leopard, and replaced the ones on El Capitan with this ones. Rock solid!
Now i have my configuration again. Was thinking about pre-editing some .plist's, so that u can have diferents settings and configurations, stored in zips in User > Library > Preferences, so u just delete plist and decompress zips.
      Thanks for your post!

Could you send me plist files of Snow Leopard as you mentioned before?
    (my mail : lyleseo@gmail.com)

I'm using Apogee ad16x and da16x for converters operated through Lightbridge.
Definitely need to operate full ADAT 16 channel of Lightbridge.

    Many thanks to you

  • Hi to everyone! Just solved my driver/GUI problem! I installed the driver version for El Capitan (http://maudio.boards.net/thread/4/fir...). It works fine with 10 i/o but the GUI doesn't work. I had a time machine backup of Yosemite with 1.8-10 driver (working well). I've replaced the m-audio application from backup to El Capitan application and now the panel appears!!!!
So you can change everything you want!!

  • Hi, thanks a lot for this topic! I have been running Lightbridge an 1814 (and Motu 828) with Logic for years with Mointain Lion but I needed to switch to Yosemite recently. The instructions above worked well except one thing - sudo in terminal - my freshly installed Yosemite didn't recognized it in recovery mode. But this: https://www.imore.com/how-open-apps-u... helped even in Finder.
    So, thanks again!
