Why will not there be more updates to Profire? (Os X Sierra)

I would like to know what is the reason why M-Audio decided that there would be more support for Profire and the following versions of the operating system of apple.
We are many users who have this problem and we feel abandoned because neither Apple nor M-Audio give us a solution.
In order to work, we need to solve the problems of the programs we occupy, since the new versions of programs are only compatible for the new operating systems, and we can not install them because there is no compatibility of our M-Audio product for the new OS X.

What is the reason to stop these updates?

  • Well you could try to show some respect at least and make an effort to open source the drivers.

  • I'm trying to get it working on Sierra now. Booted into recovery mode, wrote this in terminal as suggested: nvram boot-args="kext-dev-mode=1" (no sudo needed in recovery mode as you may have figured out).

Afterwards, 2.4.4 installs fine (where it was complaining about the very same flag before the previous step). However, ProFire 610 is not being detected as a sound input/output and the M-Audio control panel is not operating either.

    Updates to follow.

Edit: oh and, it appears that you cannot just let products from any developer execute on Sierra. Which prevents 2.4.4's uninstaller from running (yet not the installer). So a clean install is a bit out of the question for the time being.

  • In this studio/audio production industry the ultimate goal is to have products supported forever and we're certainly getting there with newer interfaces designed around native class-compliant drivers built into PC and Mac operating systems. Apple and Windows seem to be more aware of the need for consistency as well. But, the firewire series devices are older and were designed around the need for specific drivers. Those drivers cannot possibly be updated forever, especially considering that they were initially designed by AVID.

I dropped a lot of $ on my Profire2626 when bought it new years ago. Around $800.

I'm a 22yr experienced engineer (MSEE) in all-things circuit design, firmware development and overall consumer/computer product development. I'm also a semi-serious recording musician. And I'm not happy about M-Audio's lack of long term support for the ProFire2626.

I'd like to correct a previous post's rationale for M-Audio's lack of ongoing MacOS driver support, especially for sure a great capability the ProFire2626 has(d) been. It is NOT about the longevity of an interface bus technology. Firewire isn't dead yet and, technically speaking, is already ideally supported for this application. Moving to a faster/more whiz-bang interface like USB 3.x/C or Thunderbolt doesn't buy you anything with ProAudio gear.

What It's really about is trying to make maximum $ by trying to keep up with the barreling, surging tsunami of computer technology. But M-Audio, you need to understand who your customers and market are... Your products sell to a market of musicians and pro-audio engineers and for a premium. When your customers buy an $800 piece of gear, we don't do that every 1 to 4 years like the computer tech refresh cadence. You cannot take a long-term supports stance that is intended to keep pace with computer technology. It just doesn't make sense.

So either support MacOS Sierra and later (please) or OPEN SOURCE the drivers!!

  • I read somewhere on the official M-Audio Facebook page that ProFire 610 and 2626 are now "property of Avid" according to M-Audio themselves. I wonder if anyone can confirm that here? So we'd know who to ask to open source the drivers.

All of my keyboards and sound interfaces are from M-Audio. I always recommended M-Audio to my friends.

Now I feel regret and fooled. It's such a shame!

I believe I will happily tell this story that M-Audio even doesn't support it's own product.

Never by M-Audio in the future!

    So frustrated!! FK to M-Audio

    • Did you do a clean uninstall of previous drivers?
    • Yes, I execute `locate M-Audio`, and `rm -rf ` all directories listed.

`sudo /usr/libexec/locate.updatedb` is recommended to rebuild the file index before executing `locate M-Audio`

So the idea is to just throw away these consoles right?
And then obviously, if I want to replace it with a newer one, M-Audio expect me to trust in their products again?

  • firewire being a dead technology is such a bullshit excuse... RME has updates for all their firewire devices... I know I'll never buy an M-audio device again...

  • I'm usually careful when I update to major new versions of the OS. At the time I thought it was a minor patch and would be low risk.

  • Hey guys - first I add my voice to the chorus, PLEASE M-Audio open source the drivers if you are not going to update! We are musicians and we have expensive stations and work systems that we paid hardly, and we do not change them all the time!

Well, after the rant, the important stuff:

I managed to get my Profire Lightbridge working well under OSX El Capitan, with all ADAT active (recording 96khz, 16 ADAT channels from my Apogee converters, and clocked from a external source). El Capitan is a well optimized and solid system, so I am going to stay with it, i will totally pass on Sierra.

Here is exactly what i have done:

    1. Do the installation of the driver, using the package and instructions provided by Olav in this post: maudio.boards.net/thread/4/fir.... After following the installation procedure, the Lightbridge will be visible under OSX El Capitan (showing up in midi/audio configuration), but only with 10 channels, as only one ADAT input is activated by default. Sadly it is not possible to open the M-Audio control panel at the system preferences to activate them, so I had to do this next:

    2. I installed the M-Audio original driver from M-Audio in a laptop i have with Snow Leopard, and used the Lightbridge control panel to activate the ADAT and select other configuration options.

    3. In that same computer, went to User > Library > Preferences to locate the preference list files created by m-audio, which are "com.m-audio.device-settings.firewire.plist" (this is the important one that stores the input / output configuration, clock source, etc.), and "com.m-audio.appc.MAfw.plist" (this one i think only stores the configuration panel status). I took both files and took them to my main computer.

    4. I downloaded from the App Store and installed in my main computer the Apple's application "XCode", which - amongst other things - allows you to open, edit and save preference list (.plist) files.

    5. I went to User > Library > Preferences > and opened the file "com.m-audio.device-settings.firewire.plist" in XCode.

    6. I also opened in another window the file i had imported from my laptop with the right settings (ADAT activated, clock source, 96khz, etc)... and copied the Lightbridge settings from the laptop, to the main computer plist file.

    7. Saved the file with the updated settings, and exit XCode.

    8. This is likely not relevant, but i did it anyway: the file "com.m-audio.appc.MAfw.plist" was not present in my main computer's, so I copied the one from my laptop into my User > Library > Preferences folder.

    9. I shut down the computer, connect again the M-Audio Profire Lightbridge, and reboot.

    10. I went to Midi / Audio configuration, and the Lightbridge was there working at 96 khz, with all ADAT channels activated (18 ins including the SPDIF, etc.) and clocked from a external source :)

I have been doing some tests and so far it has been totally reliable, no cracks/pops whatsoever. I hope this helps somebody to get their Lightbridge working under El Capitan. The control panel does not work, but I find this solution perfectly workable.

In any case, to reach this point has taken one day and a half of my time. It really calls my attention that the driver seems indeed to work fine, so without a technical reason behind, why it is not updated? If do not want to, at least show some dignity and release the code so the community can take care of it.

Programmed obsolescence is a crime against human kind and the world, and making all us users lose our time and money in this, it is a VERY bad image policy.

  • M-Audio please fix this before I start posting all over the internet that you don't support your product. If you don't wanna be bothered open source the drivers. This is horrible for people with up and running studios that suddenly cant use the gear they paid good money for. I purchased 3 of them! Now what? Am supposed to throw them in the garbage? How dare you!
